Hawaii, known as "the Crossroads of the Pacific," has a rich aviation history. The first powered airplane arrived by ship in 1910, and commercial inter-island flight began in 1920. In 1927 aviation pioneers proved that regular flights from the mainland to Hawaii were feasible and safe. Since the 1930's aviation has been essential to the growth and development of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim countries. Testimony to the importance of aviation in Hawaii is the fact that the Honolulu International Airport now averages 850-1000 flight operations per day from all over the island, state and Pacific region. Twenty to thirty percent of the flights are general aviation activities that include tour, cargo, air ambulance and flight training operations. The importance of aviation is forecast to continue to grow and expand in Hawaii and the Pacific Rim countries for the next twenty-five years. The demand for air service and qualified pilots is growing worldwide and should remain strong well into the 21st century.

Continuing an established involvement in aviation, the Honolulu Community College (HCC), in partnership with the University of North Dakota (UND), is now offering a commercial pilot training and certification program in Hawaii as part of a new college degree program. This is the first and only program of its kind giving students the opportunity to train in Hawaii for a career as a professional pilot and receives college credit. The curriculum is designed in a "2+2" relationship with UND. Students enrolled at HCC obtain their Commercial Pilot certificate with an Instrument Rating for Single and Multi-engine Land Aircraft plus a Flight Instructor Certificate upon completion of the Associate Degree program. Students may then progress on to a Bachelors Degree and advanced flight training at UND.
